The Rustic interior design style is both defined and refined. It’s the utmost combination of comfort, function and warmth. What sets Rustic apart though is its focus on practicality; everything has a reason for being there, so there’s nothing superfluous. These are the biggest elements of a Rustic design that you’ll need to follow to add it to your home:

Colour

Neutral tones will compliment the rustic wall décor, so don’t choose anything too over the top and vibrant. Whitewashed walls look really good alongside natural wood, allowing the wood to shine on its own and serve as a focal point for the room. You want the neutral shades you use near wood to be different in colour compared to the wood so that they can enhance each other rather than blending in.

The colour will be added through the furnishings and accessories, so don’t be afraid to choose a wall colour that you may consider dull. When it comes to choosing furnishings that will stand out against your neutral walls, jewel tones work especially well. You can add a bold, vibrant touch of colour to the room through deep hues of red, green, purple or blue.

Natural Materials

Wood is obviously one of the biggest natural materials you can use in the Rustic design. It can be the main feature of your living room or bedroom with reclaimed wood flooring. Or, if you want something a little more affordable, you can go with a reclaimed wood effect laminate. Wood panelling will also give you a little bit of luxury on the walls. Wooden beams can enhance the design and create a dynamic look for the ceiling.

Stone is another excellent natural material that fits in well with the Rustic design. Flagstone flooring will add a rustic element to your kitchen or bathroom. It’s going to be a look that’s both natural and durable, while making the space feel cosy and warm.

Metals such as iron, copper or brass are all perfect choices to use for accessories. You can choose imitations of these if you don’t have the budget for the originals. Some imitations will still look incredible and work seamlessly with the rest of your design. Metal works really well with lighting options such as wall sconces or overhead lights.

Fabrics

Rustic fabrics are going to be all about comfort. Choose fabrics with a comforting texture and a warm hue that make the space feel inviting. Cosy blankets and chunky knit throws will add a perfect touch to your sofa. You could even go with something luxurious like a faux fur or patterned woven rug. This will add an eye-grabbing bit of colour to your floor while protecting it from damage. If you’re looking for something a little bit more feminine, floral furnishings also work really well with the Rustic design.

No Straight Lines

Straight lines go against the Rustic design. Choose shapes that are organic or abstract to give your Rustic design a unique look. If there are natural flaws, highlight them. Knots in the wood, uneven grain or scratches on your furniture all contribute to the rustic feel of your home. Natural materials are naturally flawed, and the Rustic design style embraces this element instead of trying to hide it.

It’s okay if your piece of furniture is a bit worn down by time, because it all adds to the feel. This makes the Rustic design an excellent option for those who are looking for something on a budget. You can easily incorporate second-hand furniture into your home without it taking away from the overall look. In fact, it can arguably enhance the lived in feeling of the design.

Practicality

Nothing in the Rustic interior design should be functionless. You can still add fun accessories to the rooms, but try not to overdo it or you’ll risk it looking out of place. Rustic rooms will have many places to sit or blankets to use to feel cosy. They won’t have needless clutter keeping the room from feeling inhabitable.
