January Home Décor Projects to Start 2020 Right!

It’s a new year and you’re probably feeling enthusiastic about the fresh start. January is a month of renovation, of setting the tone for the other 11 months ahead of you. So, what are you going to do this January to transform your life?

Carrying out a 2020 home renovation project in January is an excellent way to mark the new beginning. You don’t have to invest a ton of money in the upgrade of your home in Singapore. A couple of simple home décor changes can ensure a fresh and exciting ambiance in your home.

So, what are some of the best home décor projects to carry out in January 2020? As a well-known Singapore interior design company, we have a couple of recommendations for you.

Patterned Fabrics

Fabrics provide amazing opportunities for the introduction of a new theme or the modification of the existing interior design concept.

Start with pillows and throw rugs that carry similar patterns or colours. Monochrome used to be popular for some time but patterned fabrics have come to replace the blocks of colour. You can opt for something geometric, a nature-inspired pattern or even an abstract print.

This theme can also be executed in the bedroom. Standard white linens are quite boring, patterned bedding will definitely create a much livelier mood. It’s up to you to decide if you’ll rely on the same pattern throughout the house or if you’ll carry out a distinctive change in the bedroom.

Change One Wall in Your Living Room (or Bedroom. or Dining Room)

Walls give you a large surface to work with. If you create one accent wall in a room, you will immediately transform the entire environment.

So, instead of having four identical walls in your living room, choose one that will stand out and be transformed in a work of art.

An elaborate mosaic isn’t that difficult to put together, it will simply require a lot of time. Artistically-inclined individuals can carry out such a project on their own. Everybody else will be better off hiring professionals for the job.

There are so many ways you can go with a mosaic. You can create an Ancient Greek-inspired piece of art. You can use reflective little tiles to put together a futuristic mosaic. Or for the sake of sustainability, you can make a mosaic from recycled and repurposed items to make your home more sustainable.

Alternatively, use photo wallpapers or large motivational quotes to transform a wall. Wallpaper will take you to a favourite place and the use of motivational quotes will transform an entire wall into a vision board. If you want to focus on a specific passion in 2020, a vision board wall may be just the way to go.

Get Rid of the Clutter NOW!

One of the best home renovation projects involves getting rid of the clutter. Unfortunately, many people find it difficult to carry out such a renovation because they cannot let things go.

The first month of 2020 is the perfect time to declutter and reorganise your apartment, especially if you are living in a smaller HDB flat.

Start with the selection of some smart organisation and storage units. There are boxes and organisers you can fit under the bed or place in a walk-in closet. These can hold a large volume of items that you don’t really need to have on constant display.

Even if you live in a tiny apartment, there are still ways to get organised and to discover a bit of additional storage space. A professional interior designer will give you some suggestions you never would have considered possible.

What matters the most, however, is determining what you can throw away or donate to charity. Most of us have way too many possessions that we don’t really need or enjoy. Items that have been in your flat for a long time without any actual use will have to go.

Break the Rules

One thing is certain – the world of Singapore home interior design is becoming more colourful and diversified by the year.

In the past decades, there were numerous rules and frameworks that governed the work of designers and home décor professionals. Today, many people are willing to go beyond the boundaries and explore concepts that wouldn’t have been considered possible or beautiful in the past.

Exposed bricks in your living room? Why not! Industrial elements? Bring them on! A busy, textured wall décor in the bedroom? This may be the perfect opportunity to bring the place to life.

If you have an interesting, eccentric or even outrageous idea, you shouldn’t be afraid to pursue it. Some of the best and most distinctive interior designs have resulted from bending the rules and forgetting about the standards every once in a while. What matters is being convinced in the concept and not just following a trend blindly.

And again – you will need a professional to guide you through the process. Breaking the interior design rules is fine, as long as you’re staying within the limits set by the HDB. There are certain regulations you cannot violate and an experienced designer will help you find out what’s achievable and what needs to be scrapped.

It’s an exciting new year and we can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring to the world of interior design. At Home Guide, we’re ready to embrace change and new trends. If you’d like to explore some of these new opportunities with us, don’t hesitate to contact the Home Guide team right now.
